On this episode of “In the Garage: Tech Fix Edition”, Don has been gifted a very cool “Corona Extra Sugar Skull LED bar sign”—with just one little problem: it doesn’t work!
This isn’t just a random modern decoration. The sign appears to be an authentic commercial-use Corona Extra advertising piece manufactured by “Neon Tech” in Oceanside, California. The Sugar Skull design is associated with design/patent number ZL 2018 2 2058932.8, putting the earliest likely production of this design around late 2018 or 2019.
Even better, this particular sign came directly from a bar owner, so it actually spent its life doing what it was made to do—advertising Corona behind the bar. There are also signs that it may have undergone some repairs around 2023.
But now it’s dead.
So instead of throwing it away, we’re taking it into the garage to see if we can bring it back to life.
